Zachary Segal, MD

zachary_segal.jpgDr. Zachary Segal is the founder of Retina Department of Med Eye Associates. Dr. Segal is a Miami native who graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He then completed his internship at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York and his ophthalmology residency at the Georgetown/ Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC. Dr. Segal spent two years at the University of Alabama in Birmingham completing an extensive vitreoretinal surgical fellowship. Dr. Segal has earned numerous awards for his excellence in research and patient care including the J.G. Davis Research Award. He has given numerous presentations at national retina meetings as well as authored several publications devoted to retina research. Dr. Segal is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and provides the most sophisticated surgical and medical retina care for all of his patients. His practice serves as a research site for several national studies. He is a leader in the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular surgery, retinal detachment surgery, and ocular trauma. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Florida Medical Association, and American Society of Retina Specialists.

Janis Dzelzkalns, MD

janis_dzelzkalns.jpgDr. Dzelzkalns is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in surgical and general eye care for patients of all ages. The son of Latvian immigrants, Dr. Dzelzkalns was born in Milwaukee and received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He began practicing ophthalmology at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1984. Dr. Dzelzkalns performs cataract, glaucoma, and anterior segment surgeries, as well as laser treatments for patients with glaucoma, retina and diabetic problems and complications. Dr. Dzelzkalns is an accomplished surgeon and has traveled several times to eye hospitals in India and Latvia to teach modern surgical techniques. He is a member of the Miami Ophthalmological Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American College of Surgeons, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He has authored articles and presentations on the prevention of postoperative infections, optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis, and the treatment of complications following corneal transplant surgery. He enjoys tropical gardening, aquaculture, and snorkeling.

Anil Vedula, MD

Dr. Vedula specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, medical retina, medical and surgical treatments of corneal diseases, and general ophthalmology.

He attended Duke University as an undergraduate, where he graduated summa cum laude.  He went on to earn his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, one of the nation’s most prestigious medical schools, graduating in the top of his class.  

Dr. Vedula completed his internship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, NY, where he studied ocular oncology.  He then completed his residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (Miami, Florida), the nations top residency program and eye hospital.  He stayed at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute completing a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery.  He is currently a volunteer Assistant Professor at Bascom Palmer, where he teaches clinical and surgical ophthalmology to residents and fellows.

Dr. Vedula has several published articles in many medical journals and is a co-author of several book chapters. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), and the Cornea Society.

He brings his expertise to the greater Miami community, and is available for consultation.

Ann Ballen, MD

ann_ballen.jpgDr. Ballen joined Med Eye in July 1995 after maintaining her own practice in Miami since 1986. Dr. Ballen completed her internship at the Dept of Pediatrics in Montefiore Hospital in New York in 1980, her residency in Ophthalmology at the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital, and her fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Ballen was an Instructor for the Department of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and her undergraduate degree cum laude from Harvard University. She is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Ballen has extensive experience in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility which she combines with the practice of General Ophthalmology, including cataract surgery. Dr. Ballen was awarded Volunteer of the Year for her work with Open Door Health Clinic.

A. James Segal, MD

james_segal.jpgDr. James Segal is the founder of Med Eye Associates. After completing his ophthalmology training and serving as chief resident at Washington Hospital Center and National Medical Center in Washington, DC, he began providing quality care for Dade County patients in 1975. Dr. Segal is a recognized leader in the ophthalmology community and is considered one of South Florida’s experts in refractive, cornea, and cataract surgery. He completed his undergraduate work at Brown University and earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1969. Dr. Segal is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and he is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons. He also is trained in and performs oculoplastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic procedures. His other professional memberships include: Society of Implant Surgeons, Society of Refractive Surgeons and the Pan American Society of Ophthalmologists.

Jorge Cesar Bruno, MD

jorge_bruno.jpgDr. Bruno is a board certified ophthalmologist and a recognized Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He specializes in anterior segment, cataract surgery, as well as comprehensive ophthalmology and plastic surgery. Dr. Bruno served as Chairman of the Ophthalmology Department and President of the Medical Staff at Suburban General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. From 1977 to 2006 he was the Director and leading surgeon of Allegheny Eye Center.
Dr. Bruno has also been a surgical instructor to ophthalmology reisdents for many years. He received his medical degree from Cordoba National University, Argentina and completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Hospital.

 

Inna Ozerov, MD

Inna_Ozerov.jpg Dr. Inna Ozerov is Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical corneal diseases, with a special interest in treatment of Dry Eye Syndromes.

Dr. Ozerov received her medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York.  She completed her internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, followed by Ophthalmology residency at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.  She is currently an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she had also completed her Cornea and External Disease Fellowship.

While in private practice in New York, she had also dedicated her time teaching advanced intraocular surgical techniques to ophthalmology residents at Montefiore Medical Center and Jamaica Hospital.  For her work with residents, she was awarded a Surgical Attending of the Year by the 2008 graduating ophthalmology class of Montefiore Medical Center.

In 2010, Dr. Ozerov had moved to Miami, subsequently joining MedEye Associates.  She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Florida Medical Society, as well as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.  Dr. Ozerov is an accomplished surgeon, performing cataract extractions, corneal transplantation surgeries, and vision correcting procedures.  She is also trained in aesthetic medicine, offering cosmetic lid surgery.

Aarup Kubal, MD

Dr. Kubal is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, and corneal diseases in addition to laser vision correction.

He attended Harvard University as an undergraduate, where he graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He went on to earn his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, one of the nation’s most prestigious medical schools, graduating in the top of his class. Dr. Kubal stayed in Baltimore for his residency training, which he completed at the world-renowned Wilmer Eye Institute.

He then completed a fellowship at Minnesota Eye Consultants in Minneapolis, MN, one of the most sought after cornea, glaucoma, and refractive surgery fellowships in the country. There, he received additional surgical training with some of the most prominent national and world leaders in ophthalmology. He now brings a new level of expertise in glaucoma care to the greater Miami community.
